What is Punk?!

Question: I remember Punk from the 70's, Ramones, Clash, Pistols, Adverts etc but now Punk does not seem like rebelious music for the youth!, in fact its all clean and shiny, who stole the name?

Who do you consider Punk and why?

isn't it all just a state of mind? or did that change too? you don't have to have a mohawk or a pair of plaid chained up pants to show you are punk. it's a state of mind. of rebelling against mainstream society, questioning authority! as far as what is punk...musically these days....heck if i know...it's all pop filler these days.

I am.

like rock it goes together

punk is a type of thing a person can be
they normally skateboard. listen to punk music and normally like mohoks
hope that answers your question

Cocky kids who think they have all the answers and they don't have a clue.

hiya!
punk is like people who listen to punk music & like to dress in bright but gothic coulors. they are basically like more happier goths. i hope this helps! i used to be a bit of a punk my self. but i gave it up coz my music style changed.
..x..

I can agree with that, even though I wasn't even born then. there isn't really a rebellious sort of music anymore.

Not many good new punk bands around, everyones into this poxy emo crap. I consider NOFX, Rancid, Rise Against, No Use For A Name, No Fun At All, Face To Face and Pulley as punk, any band member who wears a mohawk with pride and isn.t singing love ballads is pretty much punk.

Legend has it that a fan once asked Billie Joe Armstrong, frontman of pop punk veterans Green Day,what punk was.Armstrong is said to have kicked over a garbage can and told the kid "That's punk". At which point the kid kicked over another garbage can and asked his idol"Is that punk?".To which Armstrong replied.
"No,that's just trendy".
Whether or not that really happened probably doesn't matter but it's a good example of how people always follow the fashion.Which is what most punks did,to be honest.Punk isn't limited to music though,it extends to art and literature as well.I guess it's the art of being both relevant and irreverent.Must have seemed so fresh at the time and it's certainly one of the musicla moments that i would ahve most like to have lived through.
Although i don't approve of kicking over trash cans.Maybe that makes a trend-setter!

you got me to remember something, although this is totally irrelevant to your question, i am compelled to respond...

i am 50 years old and i have 2 older siblings. my brother is 8 yrs older than me and he used to call me punk waaayyy before that word was used in reference to any style of music. i have no idea if that was a term of endearment or if it was said to make me feel inferior. my sister, who is 10 years older than me and 2 years older then our brother, used to call him ugly... is there a style of music that i am not aware of that is referred to as "ugly" ?

who likes punks? (not me)
their music is sometimes good (mostly the old stuff)
