This has been a quandary, as times have changed and the chance of being sprayed with effluence by a passing carriage, the need for protection from the outside has lessened. The risk of being attacked by some ne'erdowell lurking in an alley or doorway has increased, hence mayhap protection fron the inside is more relevant.

The men should walk on the outside. This goes back hundreds of years when people would throw their buckets of human waste out the window. The man would walk on the outside so the lady would not get splashed by the slop.

I alway try to insure I put myself between my wife and the most dangerous elements. This could be on a sidewalk were I will walk by the street, or a parking lot where she will walk next to a car or even if we are walking along a pier/sea wall I will walk next to the water.

As a result of overcrowding and the lack of waste management people tended to throw their garbage out their windows into the street in an arch, therefore, the gentleman walks on the outside so as to protect the lady from getting hit by waste.
Yes, always on the outside .... contrary to popular belief this is not because of cars splashing from the road, as the custom was in place long before the invention of the motor car.
It actually goes back to when people in London would throw the waste from their latrines out of their top window and into the street below .... because of the trajectory of the waste, it would miss the person on the inside of the pavement ..... so a gentleman would always offer the inside to a lady ...

Yes and no I do it without thinking, I'm much more concern when we go out to dinner that she likes where she is sitting and often ask her when we arrive back home " if she likes the way I treated her tonight" It started back when I courted her. That was twentyseven years ago. We married very young.
I make sure to walk curbside any time when I am with a lady. the story I was told is if a woman walks nearer to the street is a "street walker" and if she is further from thre street is a lady.
Yes,,,,very important. A lady should always be on the inside. A man got to protect his lady friends from:-
1. Snatch thieves
2. Drive by molesters
3. Drunk drivers
4. Old nasty ladies with deadly walking sticks (my lady might just trip on them,,,,)
Not so important, but it's an automatic reflex keeping her on the inside, safe and cuddled. Not only because men had to protect women, but because I want to keep her safe and made her feel every bit loved and protected as I can, with words, acts and body language

I'll be honest i'd never heard of this until a couple of weeks ago when i went to see a male friend and he got really offended when i would walk on the outside and kept making me swap places with him! It just goes to show the class of guy i'm normally with by the fact that at 26 i've only just experienced this!!
Always have your lady walk on the inside because if you have her walk on the outside it's like your giving her away or telling others that she is single or free.
