Popularity can be defined many different ways but not by your definition. It is about what people think about you, not about how many people you hang around with. If you are well liked then you are popular. If you are a ***** and have lots of friends that are bitches then you are popular, you are just annoying.

I would have to answer the question as such....I believe that popularity is defined by many different things....let me see...you have Preps, Jocks, Stoners (heads as they were called when i was your age) geeks....every last one of them have their very own person who is most popular in the group....so you see...popularity isn't just for one particular type of person.....NEVER WAS!
