Why do people say to look up a word in the dictionary...?!

Question: .... that you've just told them you don't know how to spell?

Answers: .... that you've just told them you don't know how to spell?

It has been my experience that when people say "look it up in the dictionary" it is translated into "I don't know how to spell and can't help you."

Hiya K!

Because they have it spelled correctly in the dictionary.

cause they are dumb....isnt that retard though...i hate dictionarys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

I've been asking that very same question since I was in the 3rd grade! What kind of logic would a person be using to say such a thing?

they can't spell it enther

you can eventually figure it out

i dont know
because if you dont know how to spell how are you going to find it?
good question

That's funny because I always asked my mom that. How are you suppose to look it up if you don't know how to spell. I never really understood that saying and I still don't. Guess on how it is spelled and hope you have it right or somewhat close to the word.

Because they want to teach you how to solve your own problems.

So that you will learn to rely on your own ability and learn how to spell the word. By now you know how to sound things out and you go from there.

Quit blaming others.

cos you might know how to spell the 1st bit so youll find the word easier in the dictionary!! i dunno..=]

Because they don't know what spell check is I guess.

Sucks to be slow-witted I guess.

you can get close and find the right one.

Try sounding out the word as best as possible. You should be able to find it.

haha i totally know what u mean......idk!

Because they might not know it, they want you to figure it out, or they are to lazy to even tell you.

because u should kinda easily know how it sounds and spell just to be sure

hahahahahaha --- now that's a good one... thanks for the laugh... Happy Friday.... hahahahahahaha

Probably because they think you'll already at least know the first letter, so you know which letter page to stop at, I'm thinking :)

You sound it out and you should be able to find it....

IDK. My brother just did that to me today I asked him how to spell quiet & another word & he said look it up in the dictionary.

They want you to do it yourself. They dont wanna just give you the answer.

maybe while looking for it you will learn something.

Because it is spelled right in the dictionary.

It may take longer to find because they don't know how to spell, but they should find it eventually.

Sometimes you have to use tricks. Like looking in the 'C' section instead of the 'K' section.

Because it's all there and it's also a good habit.

Type it in MS Word or any other application that has spell check, check the word and obtain the correct spelling and then look it up.

I would smack them in the head ! People just do not listen !

OMG i know!! i am the worst speller ever... i know how it feels... how can you look a word up when you can't spell it in the first place??

they say that because they know that the dictionary will give you the correct spelling. however, they may be making an incorrect assumption about you knowing how to use a dictionary.

whenever i don't know how to spell a word, i consult a dictionary. what is problem?
