Is Texas culturally part of the South, or is it its own, unique culture?!

Question: I've heard it both ways. Many of them definitely have Southern accents (to my ears anyway) What do you think?

We're a strange state with many different cultures. Some are our own, some are borrowed from across state lines.

Technically, during the war, we were part of the CSA.

For ten years before we were annexed by the US, we were our own nation, after our war with Mexico. (Yes, Sam Houston is one of my childhood heroes.)

Some of us have accents you could place, some of us don't.

Come visit. It's entirely too easy to find a Shiner Bock and a barbecue, or a Corona and a good Tex-Mex restaurant. Beware the Sam Houston small batch bourbon, the stuff sneaks up on you.

We're more of a cosmopolitan state, due to the influx of industries and people that have moved to follow them. People always have trouble placing my accent.

Traditionally, we're considered the southwest. That's fine with us. We've never really given much thought to what anyone thinks about us.

i live in the south and i was born in texas but I say they are different! <3 lol

It's part of the south.

They are separate..... not Southerners....

Texans like to think they are different, but they're not. Texas, culturally, is not much different than Florida or Arizona, just bigger.

having been born and raised in the south and then moving to the north I would have to say closer to the south but not totaly

Texas is it's own nation. Culturally it's becoming Northern Mexico. Please build that fence.

I live in Texas, and it's horrible but not as horrible as Alabama of Georgia.....please don't throw the baby out with the bath water!

Even though it's geographically in the south, when I think of Texas, I think of it as part of the west.

They have their own culture for the most part. I don't know how to explain them but they are different from us Tennesseans (a.k.a Southeast too). It's not a bad culture, so don't take my opinion the wrong way. The part of it that borders Arkansas and Louisiana is the only part of Texas that is like the Southeast. The rest is totally different. Remember, Texas is one big @ss state, so It can have many cultures. lol
