Question: if i was to call a british person a brit its fine if i called a australian a aussie its fine, if i called a american a yank its fine so why is it seen as racist to call a person from pakistan a paki, or a chinese person a chink and so on.

I've always wondered the same thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paki#P

Edit: Some people are very quick to call someone racist. If you lived through the 1920's-1940's: that is true racism at it's worst.

Because the PC Nazis say so

Good point

i think becuz originally they never really accept the word. by the way, even as someone NOT a Pakistani or a Chinese..i kinda find it rude if someone were to call me a "paki". It's just not a very favourable word. I mean BRIT,is okay..Aussie is a cute name..a yank is normal. but "paki" "chink"..i dun think so.

Come on, who are you fooling here. Don't f**king tell me when you use Paki or chink or Jap you mean it the same way when you use Brit, right ? You know exactly what I'm talking about, or do I need to explain more ?

its not about racism, its just to keep the nambi pambi ethnics happy. thats all

really dont know the answer but for me i just dont care what racist we are all im just thingking is how we can resolve the earth problem same as you question^-^peace my frnd!

Historically used as derogatory terms of abuse, I think, rather than desciptions of nationality and the connotation is still there. Like calling a Brit a whinging Pom?

I don't think it sounds racist. They may think that we divide them into special groups when we called them by their nationality. Some people get offended easily.

It is the intent others have had behind the words in the past that make them so offensive.

Because originally it was said detrimentally.

Yank or Aussie - how about eye tie (phonetic)?

Incidently not Brit, English.

i dont know it all to do with stereo types aint it well i think this hole racist parade needs to stop sick of pplm gettin false accuzations of being racist its perfetic like your not aloud to say bah bah black sheep any more or black board it stupid

Surely nicknames are the prerogative of the people bearing those nicknames.

If British people are happy to be called Brits, then that's fine.

If Australians call themselves Aussies, then that's fine.

In my experience, Pakistanis object to being called Pakis - and it's not my business to ask why. If they find it offensive, then surely it's common courtesy not to use that them. It's not PC, it's politeness and good manners.

Actually, I do know why it's offensive - it's because ignorant racist people have used the term "Paki" abusively to any South Asian people, Indian., Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan.

It's racist to call Chinese people 'chinks', because they don't like being called 'chinks'. Simple, isn't it?

EDIT: I see the same old PC crap is coming out. So why did my children (in an area of about 20% immigrant population) learn Baa Baa Black Sheep in nursery school?

And there aren't blackboards in schools now, because they're white - for use with marker pens.

You have to look at how the word was originally used. If the word was originally used for racial abuse, then it's not right to say it. That's why the words "chink", "paki", and even the n word, is best left unsaid. Plus, calling an Australian an "aussie" or an American a "yank" has nothing to do with race, so they shouldn't even be compared.

I don't think chink is ok however back in the day the races of Asia were quite acceptably termed as oriental, now it is (pc )incorrect - even the term Asian is so-so ok
The shortening of whole word race from pakistani to paki is no worse than the Aussie shortening of Lebanese to Leb or Italian to I-tie......basic laziness - no offence!

It`s always amused me why Aussies call us Poms, surely there forefathers were "Prisoners of Her Majesty", doesn`t offend me.
Regarding Paki and Chink it`s probably that the terms came from rascists. remember "Paki Bashing in the late 60s/early 70s.
The PC police have jumped on the band wagon as well to make matters worse.

My experience with some of these people is they can be every bit as racist as anybody else and your point of view is valid

I am not sure but it really should not be racist.

just one of those issues that will never be solved.xx
