They were named after Theodore Roosevelt.

Our former president Teddy Roosevelt started the trend.

Teddy Rosevelt, who was bear hunting and didn't have the heart to shoot a cudly bear cub (He'd had no qualms about slaughtering it's mum, mind!)

The first 'teddy' was named after Theodore Roosevelt', the American president. I think it was made for him and the name has stuck ever since.

Named after Theodore (TEDDY) Roosevelt!

Theodor Roosevelt..his nickname was "Teddy".. He was hunting, and to make it easy for him ,,someone tied a bear to a tree...but he did`nt shoot it ...people started calling them Teddy bears after that!

The name Teddy Bear comes from one of President Theodore Roosevelt's hunting trips to Mississippi.

The name Teddy Bear comes from one of President Theodore Roosevelt's hunting trips to Mississippi. There were several other hunters competing, and most of them had already shot something. A suite of attendants of Roosevelt who were hunting with hounds treed an American Black Bear after a long and exhausting chase, suggested Roosevelt shoot it. He refused to shoot it himself, deeming this un-sportsmanlike,but instructed that the teddy bear be killed to put it out of its misery,[citation needed] and it became the topic of a political cartoon in The Washington Post on November 16, 1902. A Brooklyn store owner, Morris Michtom, saw the drawing of Roosevelt and the bear cub and was inspired to create a new toy. He created a little stuffed bear cub and put it in his shop window with a sign that read "Teddy's bear." The toys were an immediate success and Michtom founded the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co., which still exists today.

At the same time, in Germany the Steiff firm, unaware of Michtom's bear, produced a stuffed bear from Richard Steiff's designs. They exhibited the toy at the Leipzig Toy Fair in March 1903 and exported 3000 to the United States.[2][3]

By 1906 manufacturers other than Michtom and Steiff had joined in and the craze for Teddy Bears was such that ladies carried them everywhere, children were photographed with them, and Roosevelt used one as a mascot in his bid for re-election.[2]

American educator Seymour Eaton wrote the children's book series The Roosevelt Bears,[4] while composer John Bratton wrote "The Teddy Bear Two Step" music which with Jimmy Kennedy's lyrics became the song "The Teddy Bears' Picnic".[5

It comes from Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States. It was the refusal to shoot a bear is what earned him the legacy. To me however, his legacy is and always will be with me the establishing of the National Park System throughout the United States. Yosemite, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Shenandoah, Niagara Falls (to name a few), are all preserved for the ages due to his legislation .

From Theodore Rooselvelt who a bear made for him, and it was called teddy, a shortened name of Theodore

Here's a bit of trivia for you:
