When my father was helping me load my Volkswagen that afternoon after I'd just turned 18, he shut the door for me as I sat there in the driver's seat, and grabbed my shoulder and looked me square in the eye and said, "Be sure to take the Northern Route to Canada, and did you give that door key to your mom?"
Then he handed me a 'large bag' of M&M's and patted the top of my car with the manly pat that is all too familiar when men part.
Ahhh, sweet memories are great, aren't they?

THEY ALWAYS USED TO CALL ME MISS AMERICA

my mom was a single mom - she often said "we don't have much but we do have love"

One time, during a particularly hard time of life, me and my Mom were having a serious conversation and I asked why she had not given up and walked away on me yet. She said "You will not understand unconditional love until you have a child of your own. I will love you no matter who you are or what you do and there is nothing you can do that will make me stop. You are my daughter." It was the moment when I realized that I really did not understand, but that one day I would.
