As a youngster, I'd usually get into trouble when I came home late and Mum would be standing at the front gate with her hands behind her back. I'd seen her like this before (she had a rolled up newspaper in her hands) and I knew that I was in trouble.
Just as I walked past Mum and inside the gate.......WHACK!!!!! - on the back of my legs......"YOU WAIT TILL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME" she'd say "HE'LL TEACH YOU NEVER TO DO THIS AGAIN".
Later, Dad would come home and he'd talk quietly to me about what I'd done wrong, but never raised his hand to me.
The newspaper never really hurt coz Mum was small and weak but the thought of the possibility that Dad might use it one day, set the fear of God into me. I used to cry just thinking about it while I waited in my bedroom.
All in all, my parents were great - unfortunately, they're not with me anymore..........I miss them so much :-(((

Yes, when I was a little boy my mum threw my teddy bear out. I was devastated.
oh yeah, spankings. I used to cry but now i see it was for my own good, preparing me for better things in life, I like them now.. lol
Ha, thanks for bringing back the memories, My Dad would say, "I am gonna whip you til you cry" My sister would start crying and never get a whipping, I on the other hand was hard headed....I would not cry, my Mom would have to stop him from whipping me......cause I would never cry. Gosh I was stupid! :)
My mom was the disciplinarian, I used to get whacked with a yard stick on the back of my legs... and that was just for back talking. And yes, she gave me plenty to cry about. ;-( That was the way, back in the fifties and I sure don't hold that against her.
