No disrespect to the deceased, but why do drug addicted celebs get all the media!

Question: ...when they die? Heath ledger wasn't the topic of any magazine, news program, or celebrity entertainment show until he died, neither was any other pill-popping celeb before their own untimely demise.

I bet there was only a small percentage of audiences who even knew he had a new movie coming out until yesterday.

Also, why does he get all this attention vs. Joe Schmoe who lived on Main Street, who also died yesterday? I'm sure the avergae Joe contributed more than just some good movies in his life. Joe Schmoe was probably a humanitarian that contributed thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of volunteer time to community service...but he just gets a 3 line column in the local paper's obituary. Heath Ledger is getting more media attention than MLK did on a federal holiday. MLK had a dream...but Heath Ledger had a couple movies, a drug problem, and a movie star girlfriend.

I'm not tryna discount anyones life. It's a shame when anyone's life is cut short...

I'm not one of these celeb mega-fans. In fact, I feel sorry for the total lack of privacy they have. But, that's part of their job.

That being said, these stars have fans. These fans will be attracted to news about them. Such news will increase traffic to the news websites, the ratings of the news programs, etc.

IMO Heath Ledger was a great actor, and very underrated. I liked all of his movies I watched. And on a side note, drug problems are problems, not reasons to judge someone. Every single one of you likely has a drug addiction of some sort, be it nicotine, caffeine, etc.

That "you" was a nonspecific "you" also. :) I've seen a lot of places on the net talking about drug abuse, and in turn talking negatively about Ledger. Report It

  • the MEDIA & HOLLYWOOD think our lives are so pitiful that we need to know every second of Celebrities lives. They think they are giving us what we want.

    SAD.

The American public loves this stuff! We love to see a good train wreck. It sells, so the media keeps putting it out there.

    Hey Alexis!!

You know something, you have an excellent point there!!

For me, I'm REALLY not into celebs that tough. But I was shocked because he was young and kinda unexpected. But little did I know he did drugs...

I just know if I ever come across a LOT of money, there's NO way I'd do drugs. Ever.

I think Heath Ledger was a brilliant person and a great actor. It is a shame that he passed at the age of 28. It is a big deal because he was well-known. It isn't interesting to the entire world when Joe Schmoe dies because the whole world didn't know who Joe Schmoe was to begin with.

I understand what you are saying, but I think it is disrespectful to complain about a person's death getting media attention. Maybe if it went on and on and on like when Anna Nicole died, but come on, girl, he just died like, 20 hours ago or something.

And what's the point in mentioning that he was drug-addicted? I was not aware that he was drug-addicted, and even if he was, lots of people suffer from various addictions; certainly not just celebrities. It does not automatically make his or anyone's life less meaningful or valuable.

    you're right.......

the media don't care about people that don't bring a story to the table. if there's a story there, then they are there. that's just the plain and simple truth.

I definitely agree with you... everyone always seems to focus on all the negative aspects of anyones lives. People hardly make a big deal of the GOOD things people do, like support charities, visit third world countries, etc. All you ever see is drug addictions, unwanted pregnancies, its always all about scandals and never about the good things people do. Apparently, being in a movie makes you more important than anyone else, simply because they can PRETEND to be someone else? I dont understand it either.

However, I just want to add I did really like Heath Ledger and all the movies he was in (except a Knights Tale). I was saddened to hear about his death. He did seem like a good person and a great father. Its not that he was addicted to drugs, it was reported he had sleeping problems due to his last movie (Batman) as his role as the Joker required alot of preparation and he had to "see through the mind of a psychopath." He wasnt sleeping well, so ultimately was taking sleeping pills. He accidentally took too many. Not being able to sleep can make ANYONE go off the edge. My thoughts are with his family, whether he's famous or not, he was way too young.

He wasnt a drug addict and he didnt like to be the center of attention in his private life, but you are right about Joe Schmoe and MLK.

Easy because he's job was to entertain us and he died. It doesn't mean that he was more important then Mr. Schmoe just that he more known. My heart goes out to everyone who has died, is dying and who is struggling to over come drug abuse.

You know, it is sad when anyone dies at a young age - and it is sad when anyone battles with addiction, which is believed to be a disease. I think SOMETIMES celebrities reflect a portion of the average persons life. I am very sad by Heath Ledgers death, and I would be very sad if any young talented handsome man with a daughter died. I don't know why you would be so bitter about it... Even celebrities are people.

I couldn't have said it any better than Linz did.

You need to wait on the facts before you throw him into the pile with all of the so called pill popping addicts. Yes it has been reported that he had spent time in rehab that doesn't mean he had fallen off of the wagon. He had also been reported to have had pneumonia which can, even these days, still kill you. So before you go bashing someone, whom I'm quiet sure you don't know personally, let's wait on the reports!

Well, because the media thinks it is big time news. There was a similar question on the military section, and I will say what I said there.
If a PFC is killed in Iraq, is there this type of coverage? If a policeman is killed while stopping a buglary, will the coverage be national with every news channel covering it for hours on end? The same with that PFC and with your example of Joe Schmoe.
While I was watching the news (btw, they were actually NOT covering the ledger death at that time), along the bottom of the screen where blurds of news are scrolled, I read that a solider was killed by an IED. There was not a mention at all in the news report that I watched and no other news program covered that story. They were to busy covering a drug addicted movie star.

I couldn't agree with you more.

Those who get so wrapped up in celebrities that when you see how they react to anything their idol does, you'd swear they were close friends or something.
The reality is, the social circles to which these celebrities belong , certainly don't include the idolizing fans. Although the fans have the delusion that because they know the celebrity sooo well, the celeb surely must know them as well.

And not to break the bubble of a lot of fans, but a lot of these celebrities don't give a rat's patoot about their fans who become real pain in the a** with their obsessiveness.

Another reality is that hardly a week goes by that someone in Hollywood doesn't have some kind of incident that goes the limit and they die. Money and advantage does matter when you see the things scumbags get away with.

Because it's what the people wanna hear! Most human beings thrive off of gossip it's how they get their rush in life...I think it's just juicy for the gossipers and it sells like sex
