Press one for English??!

Question: I find this really quite offensive. This is America where (most) of us speak English. Press one for any other language but English. What are your thoughts?

It gripes me no end. I think the recording should say, "Stay on the line for English. All others, hang up and call back once you've learned English." But that's just me.

(By the way, my mother immigrated from Germany. She worked her bum off learning English, learning how to do things the "american" way. She did not pass her citizenship tests in any other language but English, and no one ever, EVER had to try to find a translator at a sandwich shop because they couldn't understand her order).

It's annoying!!

I totally agree with you! I find this so annoying as well not just affensive!

Actually - Spanish is very large in America.

But I've never cared about it enough to think about it.

Remember the Alamo.

I thin you're an idiot. I really hope that at some point in your life you end up in a foreign country that's intolerant of you're inability to speak their language.

Wow, this is why I enjoy being a Canadian. When you are a Canadian, you are what culture and ethnic you came from. Where as in America, your only patriotic about one culture, that being American and speaking English.

My thoughts are, you should be more like the Canadians.

I agree with you.

Druk op een voor de Nederlandse. :-)

i don't think it is offensive i mean a good percent of the population does speak english and America is a melting pot and if a phone went through evey language spoke you'll be on the phone forever

well.... im sure the other service / buttons is for tourist or non english speakers ... its non offensive ... its a service where it caters to non english speaking person ....

i also speak Spanish, but i agree with you, when they come to America, they need to learn English.

White people aren't the only ones who live here and I'm sure if you didn't speak English well, you'd appreciate it if they had a different language feature. Plus, it's not that hard to push "1."

That is very annoying, but the best part is if you wanna a credit card without a social security number press 2 for spanish. They won't ask!!! Just need a billing address. It is so the people who aren't legal to be here can give the banks money. WHAT IS AMERICA DOING???

if those directions are in english, how would other people know what to press?
hmm?
ever thought about that?

if u come here learn the language or go back!!!!!!!!!

That, my friend, is the effect of capitalism on our culture. Businesses will tailor themselves to better make a profit. Annoying... yes. But honestly, people who cannot speak English stimulate out economy enough to get language accommodation. So all in all, either become a communist or accept it...

Everyone is right because this is the USA, and exactly what is the philosophy of a Canadian? And for the guy remembering the Alamo, what is your point? Did you know that no American escaped that was in the battle, they all died. We fight for our rights and protection, and we fight for our freedoms. This is not necessarily a physical fight, but at times it goes there. And, yes I do get irritated about having to answer 5 or 10 questions when trying to speak to a representative of some company, but no the question about what language does not happen to be one of them. I think that this a very considerate question and wished that other countries had the same manners.
