How do you explain to little children about race?!

Question: my co-worker's son is around 4-5, and everytime he sees a black person he points at him and says "Tiger Woods"

and we are not sure how to explain to him that not all black people are Tiger Woods and we all have different race.

any suggestion?

Just show him pics of different people of different races. I used to work in a daycare in college and that seems kind of strange to me. Typically, kids that age want to know why people are brown or why people are white, or whatever but they hardly ever associate an entire group with just one person unless they're completely isolated. Is Tiger Woods the only black person he's ever seen?

"that not all black people are Tiger Woods and we all have different race."

That'll be a start

that child is slow
that parent is racist

HAHA, he is 4 or 5, dont worry about it, he will learn soon enough.

no need, just say thats not tiger woods!

tell him people are like crayons

that race is when having a competition of anything to win over!.. it could have 1st prize and or 2nd or 3rd!!..

What do you mean that all black people are not Tiger Woods!
That sounds racist to me!

show em a bunch of pictures of different doggies and then show them a bunch of different kinds of people. Doggies ar doggies, people are people.

Tell it like it is. I just simply explain to my 5 year old daughter that there are many, many "cultures" in the world. Whenever she sees a black person, she calls them "brown"....and we're Native American. I focus on the "culture" part of it and not the colour of skin.

Be honest. Emphasize that all people are equal. Race is just telling of a person's heritage (history) but it's not always accurate and doesn't necessarily tell anything meaningful.
Not all blacks are from Africa, for example.

I'm not sure if there really is a good answer to this. At the child's age, there will be very little understanding of different ethnicity's. Probably the best thing to do is just correct the child by saying something like "No, that's not Tiger Woods, that's "so-n'-so". Don't allow skin color to dictate any type of separation. We're all humans. I know, I sound like I'm preaching, I really don't mean to. But the best way to eliminate racial distinctions is to disregard race altogether. :)

I hope this helps. Good luck.

There's only one race, the human race with different colors of skin.
