Make good eye contact and smile...maybe after two or three long glances, I'll make my way across the bar to start a conversation if they haven't already headed my way. That seems to work like a charm for me every time.

Just let 'em know! My big thing the past couple-a-years is to face my fears. Your question fits nicely into that category. The worst thing that can happen would be to get shot down quickly, but you know what? It's not the end of the world like I used to think! Life goes on, and opportunities are around every corner.
