Well, if you're working with virgin soil, you're going to want to plow it very gently first. Then get it nice and moist. When the furrow is dampest, you'll want to start embedding your planter. Gently at first, before long you'll find your seed has been spent.
If your ground has been used for quite a while it may no longer be fertile. You may as well sow your seed in the back 40, just as enjoyable as planting in the front yard usually. Of course never forget the self-satisfaction of hand sowing your seed. Just be careful where they land.

wait till all danger of frost is gone, then follow the directions. don't plant them too early, or you could get frostbite, and the 'seeds' will wither and die
