Well, there actually is.
There are different methods and techniques for recovering animal hides when you are trapping or harvesting.

The protocol often is species specific. For example, beaver and seal pelts are usually cut to they create a flat circle, which is stretched tight over a sheet of wood. This technique is good for larger animals.

Long, skinny, smaller animals such as otter, fox, cats and rabbits are often taken so the skin is pulled off of the body. You end up with this inside out tube, which is usually stretched over a board until it dries.

With these smaller animals, you have the option to create the tube or create the flat circle. It's possible to buy tanned pelts in either shape.
