What are some necessary medicines (over the counter) to take to Mexico ??!

Question: I am going on a trip with the kids soon. To Cancun. It doesn't matter how good the resort might be, they told me to take "diarrhea" medicines for me and the kids, because of the water, which is not good to drink. Any suggestions which ones ??

You have good advise already, except there are no liquids allowed in your baggage. Even shampoo, toothpaste or hand cream with have to be shown to customs and th en placed in baggies or they usually toss them out. Right then and there. Security is still tuff.

One good thing about Mexico is you can get most medicines from a pharmacy there. There are very little controls on the prescription drugs we take here.
Antibiotics and even some sedatives are sold over the counter.
I was worried about Montezuma revenge as well. So don't drink tape water. Wash any fruit or veggies that you bring into the hotel with soap (no joke) and your bottled water. Ice can be a problem in drinks so order only pop or juice that comes in sealed containers.
Wash your hands a lot. I would buy some chlorine bleach when you get there to mix with bath water. Brush your teeth with tequila and gargle with it too.

I've never found that I needed to take anything...they have everything that is needed there...and much cheaper, I might add.

I would take AZO cranberry pills that help keep your urinary tract healthy. UTI's can be really bad, and I don't know what you'd do for antibiotics in Mexico of anyone in your family ended up with one.

As far as diarrhea medicine, I don't know of anything over the counter that would prevent it, it would only help to relieve it.

I would just bring tons of bottled water from the states and lots of purell hand sanitizer.

Have fun in Cancun!

Take Kaopectate, Pepto Bismol and Children's Tylenol. If you are so inclined, and I highly recommend it, you and your family should begin taking Airborne two hours before your flight and have more every two hours until you're on the ground again. I know from past experience that this helps to prevent picking up bacterial infections on the plane from breathing everyone's recirculated air.

Oh, yeah...take some antibiotic ointment and bandaids, too. And don't order ANYTHING with ice in it. For beverages, try to drink only bottled...water, pop, juice, etc.

keep some pennicillin or amoxicillin around incase anyone gets sick.

DO NOT DRINK THE WATER! Only bottled water. Avoid ordering soup or anything made with water. Just in case, make sure you take Kaopectate or another anti-diarrhea medicine.

Enjoy your trip dear!

Dont drink the water.

Bottled water only.

Hmm, well, you could prevent the diarrhea by just bringing your own bottled water. However, with me, I'd take some Advil or Motrin (children's as well) for you know headaches, simple things like that. I'd also bring Peptobismol for the diarrhea if you end up getting it. You can also buy DanActive (yogurt type) which is good for regulating your digestive system to help with that sort of thing. I was on Amox. for two weeks and the doctor told me to take that to help.

Chewable Immodium.....
Would be crucial in my opinion.....
I would make sure to have children's tylenol and benadryl on hand.....The benadryl is excellent in fighting an allergic reaction to about anything...and tylenol...because no asprin is involved which could cause Rye Syndrome if it is the flu....
Peace.

Any of the over the counter ones are fine. I usually take 1/2 of one every morning just to be safe. One thing people don't understand is most of the time it isn't the water, it's the food. Stay away from produce such as salad. many times the hotel has purified drinking water (and ice - only trust ice with a hole thru it) but will wash produce with normal tap water. Also, stay away from milk based drinks and fish if you are going to be in the sun. Sounds silly but the sun will cause the milk to go sour and fish to go 'bad' before you can digest them and you get sick. Another tip. Drink 2-3 glasses of water every night before you go to bed (give time to pee -lol)

last thing - if you use pepto bismal and drink booze, your tongue will turn black - harmless but scared the hell out of me - have fun

Update: After reading the other answers I had to say this. Don't be scared of the water, just respect it. Use bottled water for everything - even to brush your teeth.

Another 2 cents from me - Take snacks with you for the kids. a very small bag of peanuts can run 8-10 dollars US at a hotel.

2 more cents - Sunblock all over the kids and MAKE THEM get in the shade every so often. They will burn 3-4 times faster in Cancun and too much sun will make them sick -

Most of the over the counter meds are probably cheaper in Mexico. The water in the Hotel area is certainly safe but by all means buy your own bottled water to be double sure. Get it in a local store NOT the hotel otherwise it will be way overpriced. Don't waste your luggage space taking more than a bottle for each of you and remember they will not let you take carry-on unless maybe you bought after the security check.

I recommend taking your kids on a day trip (by tour bus) to Xcaret. http://www.xcaret.com/

Immodium worked best for me. Read the directions though....you don't want to return and let loose on the plane...lol.

Have a fun- and safe trip!
