Can a fighting dog ever really become a housepet?!

Question: Had to raise my brow at the headline story of that one athlete's dogs being trained by shelters to become pets for other people. Having had dogs of my own in the past, as well as being around other people's, my belief is that once they develop a certain personality, you can't change them back into something else and it's a waste of time trying. In the past, a dog like that would have been put down on the spot.

What do you think?

i would never trust a taught fighting dog...they could snap at any minute...they have only been taught one thing and that's how to fight.....so if it's been rescued then i very much doubt that it could be reformed

I don't think so<

My pit bull is a rescue dog and he was fought repeatedly...most loving affectionate dog I've had,

yeah, we should just kill everything that doesn't meet our expectations.

we rescue abused dogs a lot. one of our ones who had been worst abused was a pit who was tied to a fire escape, and left to starve w/ a collar embedded in his neck. he tried to bite anyone who got near. at first, he was scared of all people and distrustful but after awhile of seeing the other dogs get love and noticing that we took care of him he became a sweet, cuddly baby. we had him for years afterward and he never bit a single person.

oh god no he can't because sooner or later down the road he is gonna turn on you or someone else

I think there is no one answer fits all, for this question. Each dog should be evaluated by professionals. I think some could be OK, depending and some will not. Certainly extra care should be taken with professional fighting dogs. Normally they would be bad to other dogs only and not to people, but you can not be too careful.

i'd buy it....for the missus

It's all just sooo sad. I hate to say it but I wouldn't want an ex fighting dog next to my granddaughter. What if something she did triggered a reflex action in him? I'm not sure the dog should be put down tho. The dog deserves some comfort and caring in this world too. Thats a tough one......good question......A gold star for you!!!!!!

Wow....& I bet those Vick dogs are mad as hell.

I'll speak from experience and say hell no. My uncle had a doberman that he rescued from abuse and having to fight other dogs and it was an ok dog but he was very tempermental and even my uncle never knew what would set him off at any time. I was attacked by the dog when I was minding my own business and they were required by law to put him to sleep because of that. Maybe I'm biased and jaded, but based on my personal experiences, I can't imagine how anyone in their right mind would think this is a good idea, especially since we are talking about professional fighting dogs. I would sincerely hope that none of them go to families with kids.

The truth is they could become housepets, however it may or may not happen but one day out of the blue they could snap, without provocation. I wouldnt take a chance if I had a child around. Pit Bulls and Dobermans can be as friendly as any but it only takes once.
