I recommend you experiment with music before it was completely commercialized if you like rock. Listen to some Zepellin or Hendrix. Both of those bands you forementioned are disgusting and simple. In fact, Shinedown got radio play by covering a Lynyrd Skynyrd song. Of Shinedown and Alter Bridge, and pretty much every other new age rock group, the lyrical content is unintellectual and the music is dull, to say the least.
