Hi Icequeen, it stems back to when people had etiquette, The rich and famous. Cups were made with the handles a lot smaller then we have today, just enough room to put one finger through and the others to balance, the cup, the little finger got left out and people saw it as proper to raise as a counter balance. Now we have mugs and other drinking equipment, there is a use for the little finger. Best wishes. Peter

I would imagine there may be a primitive cause behind this as the little finger is the easiest on your hand to brake, however i believe that a lot of people have seen others do this so merely copy, as i believe this is not a natural action for most.
