Trust me, death does have an odour. I have smelled it many times (at work)
You walk into the room and it smells sort of metallic, and old. Depends how long the person/animal has been dead for of course!
It can smeel decomposing, or just flat, it can also smell like urine and feces or blood since usualyl the sphinxter and anus let go after death. Aslo, if it is an animals and there are others in the room, they have a reaction.
Find a dead person and smell them.

go to the meat market, and ask for a tour, you'll surly smell it then. It's pretty nasty.

they don't actually "smell" it per say but they feel like something is going to happen. Like my cousin's friend just passed away in a car accident this weekend and on valentines day 2 days before she died. she kept telling everyone that she loved them and stuff. its like they have a feeling with out really knowing it.
My sister and I once helped an old man off the floor and she said afterwards that she could smell death. I didn't detect anything. The next morning he died.
Perhaps it's something more than some basic smell. Perhaps a special instinct that some people have ?
