What does the saying: "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" me!

Question: I never really understood this one, is it stating that birds are better off in nature than as pets or is there a deeper meaning?

This saying is basically saying it is better to have something that is certain than take a risk to get more, where you might lose everything. (i. e. don't spend your whole monthly income at the casino, sure there's a possibility you'll win but "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"

No, it means you are better off with what you HAVE than what you MIGHT get.....

no birds in my bush

Nice to see that you seem to care about our feathered friends, but actually this particular saying simply means that what you have (= what's in your hand) is better than what you don't have and may never get (= what's in the bush). Have a nice day!

Girl geek is right. It means ONE bird in your hand(sure thing) is worth two in the bush(not a sure thing). So, basically, be happy with what you have or the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

It's a methaphor. Its meaning is not the literal meaning of a bird in your hand. It means that, if you have to choose between something that you have for sure than something that is not decided yet, you better go with the sure thing.

Like any sayings, you have to aply it to the situation it fits in your life. If you had a couple of job offers - one or two are so much better but you are competing with a hundred guys to get it. And in the other hand you have one, wich migth not be the best but you've already gotten, it says that it migth be better to take the sure one.

Its a metaphor, using birds to describe the one in your hand you HAVE, the two in the bush you DO NOT HAVE. Its the difference between a sure thing and a possibility.
