Why is baseball not still the pastime of the USA?!

Question: I just like to play baseball. I know that football is our national sport now, though. I'll take Joe DiMaggio over Randy Moss any day...

In my case, one of my reasons would be that the Rangers blow-goats. After Nolan Ryan retired, I'm always a little surprised when they win a game.

The steroid scandals haven't helped. A couple of players' union strikes haven't helped.

It just seems to me that since Nolan Ryan retired, it's tough to find heroes in baseball anymore. Everyone suspects players of juicing and the MLB of covering it up as best they can.

The running joke is that Ventura was nominated for the Hall of Fame for,....(can I get a rimshot here?) Getting six hits out of Ryan in one game when he charged the mound. You didn't mess with "Ol' Tex" if you were smart.

With no real heroes left, a massive scandal on it's hands, congressional hearings cropping up in the news left and right, it's not much wonder that the love of baseball isn't spreading with way it used to. It's not played the way it was meant to be played anymore.

Steroids, in the wake of the Barry Bond's investigation, have spread through several of the school districts close to me. The eye opener was a cheerleader that was juicing because she wanted to lose weight. It's seen as "acceptable" in pro-baseball, which has probably done more damage to baseball than anything else.

If I want to see a good ballgame, I'll fill a flask, hide it in a cargo pocket and head to a highschool game. If I want to play in one, I'll put a keg into the back of the Jeep, ice it down and drive 100 miles for recreational game in Palestine. (I'll be competing against farmers, their wives and their kids, but even those of us on the field get beer, hotdogs and popcorn.) It's not a bad way to pass a hot Saturday night.

Ever heard of video games and porn?

because mlb screwed it up with all the players complaiing about salary and then suspicions of steriods...people just got sick of it

i agree with you 100%. baseball IS the best in the WORLD lol

joe dimaggio has the same b-day as me............
lol

football is fun .... try it

baseball USED to be the pastime of the USA. but as always, people got bored of it. so now the sprot's football. sorry.

Baseball is a dead sport.

It's boring and it has run it's course

There are still a few big markets like NYC, Boston and Chicago, but for the most part it's a has-been sport.

When is the last time you went to a baseball game?

steroids and salary cap

It's the main sport in my household. My daughter plays high school level softball and my son plays Little League. We love it! I still think that it's the great Amercian sport and pasttime.

I got sick of baseball years ago when they went on strike. Haven't been to a game since. I used to go at least once a year just to do it.

Randy Moss is an idiot, and overrated, yes... but football is superior to baseball now. Baseball just takes too long to play, and Americans don't have that sort of attention span anymore.

It's fun to play, and fun to attend games - but boring as watching paint dry to watch on TV. And since few have the time or money to play or go to the game, interest is fading.

I think the fact that baseball plays too many games (162/season) takes the significance away from it as well.

well baseball is still our pastime, but definetly not the number #1 sport anymore. for the most part baseball is a game based on fundamentals. unlike other sports where athleticism is the key. I still love baseball because of this. no matter how physically talented you are,if your not fundamentally sound you will not make it very far in baseball. ie deion sanders...jordan...

I love playing baseball.........but Its not as fun to watch as football

Fans want action, intensity, something that's fast paced. Baseball just doesn't provide that. I'll take a game of baseball whether I'm playing or watching but as a national pasttime baseball has run its course.
In terms of heroes and people to look up to, both sports are pretty god awful these days. But I agree with you, I'll take someone like Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Ted Williams or Mickey Mantle over Jim Brown, Terry Bradshaw, Dick Butkus or Deacon Jones. You don't look at old NFL players as you would a baseball legend.

Oh', so that's what it's called!! I thought it was just watching grass grow.

..Kidding.
