$3,000 scholarship: Should I keep it or should I give to my dad cause he pays fo!

Question: Here is the situation. Last week I found out I was approved of a scholarship for transferring from a community college to my current university with a CGPA higher than 3.5. I didn't believe it at first so I checked my university account summary and they credited $3,000 to my account. So I thought that the money would just be used to pay for my classes as it clearly showed on my account. So I printed out the sheet and showed my dad and told him about it. NOW TODAY I GET TWO CHECKS IN THE MAIL, made out to my name from the school, $1500 A PIECE! Should I keep the money for myself, give him half, or give him all of it? P.S. He already owns a $950,000 house, has a million dollars in a mutual fund, and owns a property that holds 4 businesses and each business pays him between 3000 and 4500 a month. I really need the money and am down to my last couple hundred bucks. WISH I NEVER WOULD HAVE SAID A WORD TO HIM BECAUSE THEN HE WOULD HAVE NEVER KNOWN. What should I do?

You should explain it to your dad the exact same way that you did here. You EARNED the scholarship with your CGPA. That was not a gift because you go to school, it is a gift of recognition because you EXCELLED in school. You earned that scholarship. You did that. That makes it your income.

If he was not paying your education, it would be yours. If you were going to school on loans and grants it would be yours.

However, I see where the dilemma lies... You would not have earned that money without the opportunity that your dad provided by paying for you to go to school.

I applaud you for realizing that just because dad has so much, you still have an obligation to discuss this with him.

Just because someone has money, doesn't mean that they have enough. He will appreciate and respect you for showing the maturity of understanding that and approaching him regarding his needs regarding this monetary success of yours. Offering payback is definitely the right thing to do.

From your wording in your question, I'm betting he won't take all of it.

You are well raised.

Blessings.

Hear Hear!! The best answer has it nailed perfectly. I can only hope I am in the same situation with my dad when the time comes. Report It
