Why are Softballs hard?!

Question: contrary to popular belief,
softballs aren't named for their physical qualities;
rather, for the "soft" spot they leave on your head
after you've been popped with one

so you can hit them with an aluminum bat.

It's gotta be hard to be good.

So that its easier to catch, and i guess to make it heavier they had to make it hard...I dunno :D

They may be hard, but they're softer than baseballs.
But not as soft as T-balls.

they are not as hard as a baseball. however, i've been hit with a line-drive by both and the softball left the bigger, longer lasting welt.
