Survey, this is awful, and could have been one of the children, why was this not!

Question: A 16-foot python stalked a family dog for days before swallowing it in front of two young children.

The snake ate the five year old Terrier-Chihuahua crossbreed at a family home near Kuranda in Queensland state, Australia.

Both youngsters - aged five and seven - watched their pet disappear.

Stuart Douglas, owner of the Australian Venom Zoo in Kuranda, said all he could see were its hind legs and tail when he arrived.

He said: "It actively stalked the dog for a number of days. The family that owned the dog had actually seen it in the dog's bed, which was a sign it was out to get it.

"They should have called me then, but (the snake) got away and three or four days later, I was called and went around and removed it after the dog had been killed."

Scrub pythons typically eat wild animals such as wallabies but sometimes turn to pets in urban areas.

Zoo manager, Todd Rose, said they squeeze their prey to death before swallowing it whole - the dog would have been suffocated within minutes.

But she said removing the half-swallowed animal could have harmed or even killed the python because dogs have sharp teeth and claws that could cause internal damage if wrenched out.

The dog was still being digested days later.

  • thats sad i care about my pets. they shulda called when they saw it

Blimey! That's a ' ruff ' way to go. I saw a piece on the news about an American man who got killed by his python. Sad.

I read that news bit this morning, that is awful! I hate snakes, that poor dog was stalked & nothing was done to protect the dog or children

im sorry, but if I had seen a 16ft snake, I would have moved house!!! Never mind anything else!

well its their own fault, they know they live in an area with dangerous animals, they should have taken more care, and rung the zoo guys when they saw it in the dogs bed. rwally, they wernt being very responible. How big are the snakes typically? depending on if they're big or small, i honestly doubt a small one could eat a 5 year old kid. i cant belive the children didnt call someone, and just gormlessly watch their pet being eaten, if they actually loved it. okay, maybe they were too scared, but they could ahve done something!!!

but i do feel bad for the poor dog.

what were the parents thinking about when they got a snake that big? with having two young children! idiots!

The stupid bas+ards should be locked up,for the safety of those children. You could not make THIS up. xx

    That is horrible.!!!

I have never been one to accept snakes as pets, and in all honesty I think it should be banned. After reading your article it saddens me even more to think that an ignorant owner could have let this happen to say the least. Whether it was the children or not, I think that the poor defenceless dog deserved more protection from it's owner than to let it suffer at the hands of evil irresponsible pet keepers. I think a prison sentence is even too mild for the culprit and should be dealt a severe hard punishment or even death. I don't support the death penalty, but when I read news like this it makes me question my own view.
