How furious would you be over this? Serious question?!

Question: The school Nurse called me last year and told me my daughter whom was 8 at the time failed her eye exam. I brought Sarrah to the optom. And they informed me nothing was wrong with her eyes , but that she did not know her capital letters well. 6months later the school nurse calls again and says she failed again, so again I took her to a different eye doctor and they said she was fine. I also took her to her regular doc who tested her and said she was fine. I get a call two days ago from the school nurse who tested Sarrah yet again and she failed. So I call all over the damn state to find her a better eye doctor they test her and her vision is 20/60 in both eyes and she can only clearly see 16 inches in front of her. The doc then explained to me that if in fact she got glasses last year it would not be that bad. She now has to wear glasses all day except for bedtime and she is 8. I dont mind she has to wear glasses I do mind that it could have been dealt with last year.

I totally understand your frustration. I have been in the medical system since I was 9 and I know the pros and cons.

One thing to keep in mind is that nothing can be done to halt the progression of bad eyes. She may have missed some writing on the board at school, but there is no harm that has come from her misdiagnosis. Second, I am not even sure she was misdiagnosed. Eyes can get bad pretty quickly. I went from 20/60 to 20/400 over just a few years. (I come by my glasses honestly, and I even had LASIK.)

I know this does not address your frustration directly, but I do hope you take some comfort in that Sarrah's eye health is fine and now she will get glasses and won't fall behind in school.

Plus, as we all know, people look awesome in glasses.

<--- living proof

Typical poor health care coverage...they dropped the ball on that one

i would go straight to their boss and talk to him. the bosses of all 4 of them. and they would be fired

Did you run off crying hysterically? I'd be mad too.

It's sad, and I think I'd be reporting some Doctors. But I think you might be right. It sucks, and it's not right, but I think they may have just pushed her through because you're on insurance assistance.

I would sue.

I'd pass that info on to the state Attorney General.
And this is the kind of treatment we will get with the Government health care.

Thats messed up... 4 different doctors told you nothing was wrong!? It may be because you have medicaid.. but there's no way to prove it. It wouldn't suprise me tho if thats what happened. This is why I don't trust doctors. (of any kind)

I'd be furious. I faced a similar problem myself after a severe cut left me with little to no feeling in my left hand. Now, I KNOW when that happens, there is something wrong. I spent two years searching for a doctor who could tell me what had happened. Two years later, I required extensive surgery to repair a severed nerve in my hand that could have been handled two years prior

Negligence - pure and simple.

Get advice.

i would be pissed too. i don't know if it's because of the health coverage or not. i would think it's more of he drs fault. we have crappy health insurance right now and even so, my husband has a great dr and always gets good care (he has chronic back pain ) i'm sorry about your kids eyes though, poor thing having to go so long like that because of those first drs...thank god the teacher kept on about it!!

Thank God the school nurse knew what she was doing.....and Thank God you didn't give up.......and kept getting her tested.......but the four doctors that gave a wrong diagnosis...should be held accountable..........that's just not right.....if some of the eye damage could have been corrected it she had gotten the proper medical care....than the Doctors responsible should have to pay

I'd be mad too!!! We think that no matter what kind of health insurance we have we should get proper care!! I'd look into legal aide and do some investigating of these doctors.

I'd be upset as well. This is something that the FIRST eye doctor should have noticed. That was shear incompetance on the doctor's part.
I have and appointment set up for my 4 year old because he failed the school eye exam. After hearing this from you, I will take extra measures to make sure he is well taken care of. Thanks for the heads up. You have just made me more aware of something as easy as and eye exam that I may have taken for granted.

edit..... I truly believe your insurance should play no part in your childs health care. EVERYONE, no matter what should be given the best. Something this country fails to do.

Doctor's are horrible with Medicaid, trust me, I use to work for them and listen to them argue about who was going to do the Medicaid consults at the hospitals. Sorry to hear about that, I am glad your daughter is finally getting the help she needs.

i love you???

I would also be furious....
Peace...

I guess I would be mad and angry too. I think the fact that you've got an answer finally, that your daughter does indeed need glasses and has now got them is a blessing in disguise, it did take you the long way round, but it was all worth it in the end. I guess the school systems around the world have flaws all over.

Ok...well there you go. I told you to take her to my grandpa (you know...). Look at all of the money you saved on glasses....quit bitchin' already. They're only eyes!
