Was Australia a Brittish penal colony in its early years?!

Question: Can someone give me a brief history.

Answers: Can someone give me a brief history.

The First Fleet arrived in Australia, at Botany Bay, on the 18th January, 1788 with the rest of the fleet arriving in the following 48 hours.

Of the 11 ships of the fleet, six carried convicts. Penal colonies were established in New South Wales, Norfolk Island and in Tasmania (Van Diemens Land) and continued until final transportation finished in 1840. The last of the convicts would most likely have been given pardons about 5-10 years later.

A man from Birmingham England told me it was. I have not looked it up on Google to verify it though..I will star this and maybe a few of my contacts from Australia can give you a history

I can't give you a history offhand, but yes, that's what it was created for.

Read In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson if you really want to know more. It will tell you way more than you ever thought possible about Australia.

Yes, It Was...!!

Yes. Britian looked to Oz after they lost the war with America. They needed another colony and more importantly they needed somewhere to put their criminals. And they weren't mostly murders, small debts and petty crimes could get you sent to Oz too. It's said that the criminals liked Australia so much they told their families to commit crimes so they would be send down too. Reason? Weather, food, living conditions, overall conditions.

yes it was. But the aborigines lived there first.

England wanted to colonize what is known today Australia, so they had the great idea of sending there all people in prison. That place was fearful because once you left England you had no chance whatsoever to come back to your family, friends and loved ones in general.
Through the years England succeeded in lowering crime but... No one knew there were plans in the colonized land to overthrow the English and create a country for their own.
So, all of the females and males living in completely freedom in what it was "prison", organized themselves, fought with the English, kick them out and... Now the English Prison is known as "Australia"...
English Brothels Madams, with their business experiences, were the first ones to start legitimate businesses to uplift the economy of their new country.
Today, Australia is a magnificent country considered with its own Continent, and in many aspects greater than England...

This must be a poke at the Aussies ?! Everyone knows it was. Fact is, the shoes on the other foot now, cos their standard of living is superior to ours(I'm British).& they have much healthier Living standards - Sport & fitness in general being on the agenda. So I'm not going to scoff at them.
ps. some of the early colonists were volunteers - makes you wonder how bad it was here to want to start afresh over there ?
