If that student was a close friend of your ex and you were the one that got dumped he shouldn't hold that against you. As far as breaking the Ice just be yourself you're a funny lady (at least you posts on here are) and that should go along way in getting your students to loosen up. My French Teacher always started a new year with a funny French joke in French and had the class try and translate it. It worked for her maybe it will work for you.
P.S. I can't believe you got dumped your sense of humor is killer and you sound like fun so there must have been something wrong with him.
