These things were never questioned at the time these stories came into being. And as a child we only laughed at the foolishness of the Emperor.
He would know that if he could not see the clothes, many more would not either.
It's kind of a case of conformity and stupidity, all his subjects pretended he was wearing clothes and his huge ego made him actually believe it.
