Well...Ego...you sure ask some tough questions. It just so happens I was recently reading "Pop Culturisms" by world renowned author Pierre Tremblay and he answered that very question. It seems that back in the late 40's and early 50's, in the great state of New York, the most despised people were---are you ready for this? Toll booth operators. The whole concept of paying tolls to use expressways seemed un-American. Even more despised were toll booth operator trainees (how hard could it be that you need to be trained?) and at first they were called Toll trainees, then it become Trollies, and finally, Trolls.
