The doctor says I have NYMPHOMANIA? Is that even a legitimate disease?!

Question: Can they cure it? Are there treatments? How do you catch it or is it something you're born with?

Can someone explain this to me? lol

The dictionary still defines nymphomania as "excessive sexual desire in a female," yet, as Groneman shows, the condition may not even exist. Nymphomania, she argues, is a metaphor reflecting society's ambivalence toward and discomfort with female desire. Victorians considered nymphomania an organic disease. In the early 20th century, psychoanalytic theory associated nymphomania with frigidity, penis envy, lesbianism and prostitutionAall thought to stem from a woman's "immature" inability to enjoy vaginal orgasms. By the mid-20th century, scientific evidence of female sexual response led to even more confused theories of nymphomania, as "sexperts" sought to reconcile evidence of multiple orgasms and easy arousal with notions of morality. Groneman, a professor of history and co-editor of To Toil the Livelong Day: America's Women at Work, 1780-1980, sketches the historical and social contexts in which nymphomania was considered, and enlivens her text with numerous medical and legal case histories. She exposes the historical association of nymphomania with "lower" classes and new immigrants, and documents the disturbing tendency to blame rape and incest on the alleged provocation of the victim. Groneman concludes, "[E]ven though the sexual revolution appears to have changed the double standard about who gets to enjoy sex or how much sex is 'normal,' a deep ambivalence still exists... toward female sexuality." Groneman's anecdotal history stimulates thought and supports her feminist perspective, but remains more a general overview than a complex analysis.

i think it means u cant get enough sex.... and i think its a physiological thing... I'm not a shrink but it probably comes from some early sexual experience in Ur life that made a lasting impression on u... the only cure is councling...

Nice ;-)

No way! Your doctor actually said that?!
You just have a healthy libido, that's all.

Opportunities for 'treatment' abound.
However, hopefully, nothin'll work.

Darlin...I got the same problem...email me and I will talk you through it....or call thats even better....

How do you treat it?

With use of self control.

i don't think there's a cure but there's definitely something that you can do about it almost any guy would take you and try to help u out if they knew that u suffered from the terrible disease LOL

I've been diagnosed also. Should we start a treatment group together? I think I have some tricks to help calm your urges (or build them up MORE!!).

You will probably need a lot of penicillin to treat that.

i have that too : )

google it or web md it

I did not think there was such a malady any more. I thought it was now considered sex addiction.

The only treatment I know is to superglue an asprin beween your knees, good luck

I have it too...generally it runs among the male population. I think you get it from bad shellfish.

I'm sure there must be a cure; but why would you want to get rid of it!!!!
Say, would mind if gf and I came over? Maybe its contagious and we could catch it from you?... :-)

I would personally see if I could help you with that, but I'm married...

However, I DO have several male friends who are available...

Nymphomania isn't necessarily a disease, it just means that you are addicted to sex. I am pretty sure that they have meetings for sex addicts just like they do for alcoholics, but you would have to research that more. And no it isn't something that you catch or are born with it is just a psychological thing that happens to some people. Besides you aren't alone I have it too, but I kind of don't want to get rid of it.

Yes its is legitmit. Yes there is medication. some say you're born with some say it's social or there is some undelying medical problem. Consult a doctor, you never know what flying around out there.

I am a certified NYMPHOMANIA doctor. When would you like to schedule an appointment?
