Generally speaking, in a perfect world, what you know is more important than who you know. But the reality in today's corporate world, I've seen many people be rewarded based on who they know, not what they now.
I'm sure everyone can name someone that is where they are today, not based on merit, but simply because they know someone (which includes relatives).

What you know is more important because knowledge is important.
Who you know may open doors in many ways but what you know allows you to keep opening them.
