Pop a hole in the lid. It's the vacuum that makes it hard to open. Sellotape over the hole if you keep some of the jars contents. It's an old chefs trick.

Edit
It really is the simplest way of opening a tough jar. I don't give a hoot for the thumbs down monkey's opinion.
Me and jj2008 know best

It's so I can't get into them. Flip!

So Men have A Purpose

(only joking of course...)

Try your other hand. I can only open jars with my left hand and I'm right handed.... weird.

lol! get one of those rubber jar lid openers...
good luck!

They're not hard to open.

Stab a hole in the lid with a fork or a knife and it will open .

vacuum pressure. Try heating the lid on an open flame for a few seconds, that should help loosen it.

It's the vacuum seal

because there airtight and you have to break the vacuum

So you smash it open in frustration and have to give the companies money when you buy a new jar.

I wish I knew!LOL! Try running some hot water over it. That sometimes helps.

Hit the top of the lid really hard a few times, then try opening it. That sometimes helps, but I don't quite remember why...

Try shaking the jar upside down it should release the air trapped inside. I do that with salsa or applesause.

Run it under water, then bang it a little against the edge of the counter.

because there are too many asians pushing down on the lid

Buy asian repellant, and youll be fine

Try doing it with one hand, that's what I have to do! Manufacturers need to think before they design these stupid tops! One tip which helps, tap the SIDE of the lid on the floor until you hear a popping sound. That means the airtight seal has been broken and the jar should open more easily.

Tap the lid with a knife.

I had to laugh out loud at this one. no really, you already know they are sealed air-tight so the contents don't spoil.
but try releasing the pressure by prying a spoon under the cap like a lever until you hear a pop, after that the lid comes off easily.

tap the side of the lid on your counter surface and it should loosen it a bit, i do this all the time when i can't open a jar... it works for me!!! x

Do some press ups then try to open it,it works every time

They are sealed under a partial vacuum. This has nothing to do with preventing spoilage of the contents -- the vacuum isn't great enough for this.

The practice was invented several decades ago following a spate of high-publicity sabotaging of food products, when jars were tampered with and foreign objects introduced by, among others, would-be blackmailers. One of the highest profile victims was the manufacturer of a well-known range of baby foods. The anti-tamper response introduced by manufacturers was to pack under a partial vacuum which would be evident by a 'depression' in the jar lid, held down by the vacuum. Once open, the vacuum is filled and this lid depression 'pops out', making it evident that the jar has been opened at least once since the production line, making it obvious if anyone has tampered with it before purchase. Some jars also have a label warning the customer to reject the jar if at the time of sale the vacuum lid has been 'popped'.

Try putting the lid under hot water for a few moments then put a cloth over the lid and turn.

Calm down love x what you need is a man to do that for you, no catch I will be your official jar opener that will be my job. The rest of the time you can keep me locked up until you need me.

It's true and particularly difficult for older people with arthritis.

It's a conspiracy by all jar manufacturers, and it does give men a sense of purpose. Have you tried turning the jar over and hitting it lid down on the counter?
