You will need to download the itunes program so you can put the songs on your ipod, but you do not need to purchase songs from itunes.
Just download the songs from limewire as usual, and then open itunes and go to 'file', 'add file to library', select the song that you want on your ipod, and then press 'sync'.
Its best if you stick to mp3 format music, ipods don't support other formats such as wma. On limewire it should say next to the song what format it is.

Yes, you must have iTunes to sync music over. Download it from apple.com, totally free. Then drag your songs from LimeWire into iTunes after you connect your iPod. You'll get the hang of it eventually. Enjoy your iPod!

Yes. Limewire will work. You drag them from the Limewire library to Itunes library and then sync them on there. It's not illegal, I use limewire all the time.
You need to use both. Download the songs you want from Limewire. And then, drag them to your itunes Music folder. Then right click the song and click on "Convert Selection to AAC". When its finished converting, delete the original one and keep the newly converted one. And thats it. You need to do this for each song you put in there, though.
