What is the meaning of St. Patrick's Day?!

Question: Saint Patrick: who was he?

Most of us know more about "Wearin' the Green," dancing the Irish jig and eating shamrock cookies with green icing than we do about St. Patrick. He is a historical figure well-worth knowing.

St. Patrick is Ireland's patron saint, born somewhere in the British Isles, who brought the Christian religion to the Emerald Isle during the fifth century.

Most of what is known about St. Patrick comes from his Confessions, which were written to record the wonderful relationship he had with God when he was an old man.

When Patrick was a boy, Britain was easy prey for raiders and pirates, including those who came from Ireland. The Irish would land their boats and sneak up on a farm, plundering and taking slaves. Patrick was captured when he was 16 and taken to Ireland where he was sold to a farmer. He spent the next six years herding swine.

During his captivity, Patrick began to reflect on his spiritual condition, "The Lord opened the understanding of my unbelief, that, late as it was, I might remember my faults and turn to the Lord my God with all my heart; and He had regard to my low estate, and pitied my youth and ignorance, and kept guard over me even before I knew Him, and before I attained wisdom to distinguish good from evil; and he strengthened and comforted me as a father does his son." From that time on, he devoted his life to God.

At the age of 22, he heard God say to him, "Thy shop is ready for thee." Patrick walked two hundred miles to the coast. When he arrived, there was a ship about to sail. After first refusing, the captain took him on board, and he arrived three days later somewhere in western Europe, perhaps France.

Eventually, he was able to return to his family, but not for long, for he had another vision. This time it was "the voice of the Irish crying, 'We beseech thee, holy youth, to come and walk again amongst us as before.'" Patrick felt the call to return to Ireland, the land that had treated him cruelly, to help the people who worshipped nature and the evil spirits who inhabited the trees and hills, who offered human sacrifices. Patrick wanted them to know the living God who had sacrificed His Son, Jesus, so that they could be freed from their superstitions and receive His love and power over evil.

For 30 to 40 years, Patrick laboured among the Irish, establishing 200 churches, a monastery and schools. He had a healing ministry; it was said of him, "He caused the crippled to walk, the blind to see, and the deaf to hear." Yet he was aware of his limitations and credited God with his accomplishments.

St. Patrick used the shamrock to demonstrate the Holy Trinity. The hymn "St.Patrick's Breastplate," thought to have been written by St.Patrick, mentions the Trinity: I bind unto myself today, The strong Name of the Trinity. By invocation of the same. The Three in One, and One in Three. When St. Patrick died, on March 17, Ireland mourned for him for twelve days.

Take out the St. to the name and just say Pat's Day with a lot of green beer, green rivers, green animals, little green people!!! :)

In the U.S., it seems like it's a day to embrace Irish stereotyopes, which is why I say that the name of the holiday be changed to Irish Stereotype Day.

The meaning of St.Patricks day is not just to get drunk it is to celebrate Saint Patrick who was like a missionary in Ireland or something...you can check wikipedia, the link is in my source.
