Why is a fringe (over your forehead) called bangs?!

Question: bangs...yeah, weird word.
It's called "frange" in French, that's all I know.

My French-English dictionary translates the French word "frange" into the English word "fringe".

I have to go to my English-French dictionary to look at the word "bang" which in North American English for "frange".

Edit:
Origin: 1860–65, Americanism; short for bangtail.
