To smile back noo, its a kind gesture and would be much appreciated and make the other individual feel good...
people feel good when they get a lil appreciation or thanks for whatever it is they do, so im sure who ever it is would like it for feel good after you do smile.....no matter how cold hearted, bad or in a hating relationship you are with them, they will deep down think....."ohhhh that was nice"=)=)=D

I do not understand what would ever make you hesitant about having a smile in that situation. For me smiling is very easy both natural and fake.

there is no reason why people should be rude. there's nothing wrong with smiling, saying please and thank you to strangers, and god forbid, possibly carrying on a casual conversation. people just need to get over insecurities of "the world is bad". put a smile on your face, and who cares? you'll probably never see that person again, and it may even make their day that a nice girl said thank you and smiled at them today :)
