If I could afford it, I'd buy a house for investment purposes.
Apartment. Less work and money.
Apartment. Someone else takes care of the maintenance and upkeep, and I'm not tied to a mortgage and having to find a buyer if I decide I want to move after a year...the market sucks right now for sellers.

If you're single, but an apartment dear! You don't have to fix anything yourself because the building will have a maintenace man. Houses are a great investment, but I miss getting to call a maintenance man and things being fixed for free. Although, you do have to pay a yearly price for his services.
Do you mean rent an apartment? If it's for the long term, buying a house is definitely wiser in terms of financial investment. "Renting" any thing is hard-earned money which you will never see again.

If you have the money now & can afford it in the future buy a house! It is a great investment. . .just make sure to check the market, such as if the houses in the area are increasing in value or will by some means decrease in any way (if they're building certain things in the area-or not building- or your neighbors are going to cause problems). Even if you want to live somewhere else someday you will have the money you have invested in the house to help purchase a new one somewhere else. If you were to live in an apartment you will never see that rent money again.
