Personally,I think that the word's meanings are about the fact that nothing material lasts --or really is that important. One cannot use money/riches to find the way to Eternity.

A shallow woman trying to buy her way into heaven.

A woman on drugs.

Bunch a words before a guitar solo.

Haven't got a clue, it was probably written in some drug / drunken stupor so don't mean anything!

However, I do know that the lyrics are supposed to reflect a book that Plant was reading at the time by Lewis Spence. Plant has said that Spence's Magic Arts in Celtic Britain is one of the sources for the lyrics to the song.

2 themes - 1/ that outward appearance is not an indication of inner beauty and 2/ that inner turmoil is a required state for happiness.

The lyrics of the song reflected Robert Plant's reading at the time, poring through the works of the British antiquarian Lewis Spence, and later cited Spence's Magic Arts in Celtic Britain as one of the sources for the lyrics to the song.

In November 1970, Page dropped a hint of the new song's existence to a music journalist in London:

“ It's an idea for a really long track.... You know how "Dazed and Confused" and songs like that were broken into sections? Well, we want to try something new with the organ and acoustic guitar building up and building up, and then the electric part starts.... It might be a fifteen-minute track."

Straight from the horse's mouth! Although the classic rock song has been interpreted with biblical overtones even satanic, I would go with what the author-composer of the song. Why should anyone see it any other way.

"...'cause you know sometimes words have two meanings."

And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last. (if you accept Christ the holy spirit will come into your heart and you will be saved.)
When all are one and one is all (in Heaven we are one with God)
To be a rock and not to roll. (Jesus is the Rock, be strong with his foundation)

And she's buying a stairway to heaven................

I used to love this song but then I almost forgot about it. To me, it means that materialistic values are worthless when it all ends. It doesnt matter how valuable or how much wealth you own because at the end of the day, you can't buy your way into heaven. I'm not exactly Holy, but I know the story about Jesus and the rich man, who couldn't give up his wealth so he walked away with deep sadness as he knew he couldn't enter heaven (supposedly). Anyways, that's my view. ;) x

They don't MEAN anything - they are just song lyrics.
