What's the real distinction between simple melancholy and nostalgia?!

Question: Melancholy is sadness which need not be caused by the past. It can be from the present or future.

Nostalgia is getting lost in the past, in those thoughts and memories that one finds dear. While some memories will in fact be sad and look like simple melancholy, some memories will be rich with warmth and a feeling of belonging that tell a whole new story to examine if you simply look close enough.

a fine line of tears....

melancholy is more of a state of being soberly thoughtful and pensive while nostalgia is the bittersweet longing for things, people, or situations of the past. i'm usually both!!

Nostalgia is missing a time, a place or person.
Melancholy maybe doesn't need a reason.

yes to the answers above , possibly below as well

I think that when melancholic, I want to get out of it!!
When nostalgic, I just want to stay there a bit longer!!
This is my personal distinction...

...keepsakes of the heart

Melancholy is attached to the spirit while nostalgia has moments, memories, that bring it up...I am a champion of both :)
