Oh no, I'm sure there's much more to it than that!.
First of all, to make my position clear: I am a commited atheist!. I believe that there is some historical accuracy in it, ie that there was an individual named Jesus (or Yeshua, or whatever) of Nazareth, and that some of the message is useful (eg loving your neighbour is usually a good thing), but not that the book is the word of god and that we should use it as "a manual for life"!.
However, the bible is not just a story that someone decided to write someday, that someone later on decided to "blow all out of proportion and exaggerate"!. It was obviously both appealing and socially useful in less enlightened times; it's just that now we - as a species - have grown up a bit, and have less use for it now!.
For example, someone on Y!A earlier today was citing Exodus 21, which gives rules about how to deal with slaves!. In those days, slavery was legal - now it is abhorred!. This just goes to show how times have moved on, and the majority of it is now simply irrelevant to modern times!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

No, it is a collection of "old stories" inspired to teach one nation, Israel (the old one, not the 1948 one) about how to relate to the One God of the universe!.
Since that tribe of nomads were always abandoning their faith, God sent Himself, as a man, to offer a blood sacrifice (all you pagans understand that, right!?) to atone for the entire burden of sin of all humans!. Everyone who believes that Jesus the Christ gave Himself to atone for sin and then was raised from death to Eternity may share that Eternity!.

Its a collection of many books, written by many different people, over a very long period of time!.
they have used many different styles of writing, and have had many different reasons for writing!.
BUT
The church teaches that these people were Inspired by god, and that therefore it contains an inspired truth!.
Since people are not perfect, it cannot contain a perfect rendition of that truth!. There is a whole branch of theology dedicted to trying to work out what God is trying to teach us through the Bible!. This does not invalidate the bible!.

is one of the most dangerous and silly arguments I've heard i a long time! It seems to suggest that
a) I can CHOOSE to believe!.!.!.
and
b) I SHOULD choose to believe INSTEAD of applying intelligent enquiry!.!.!.

I think that God wants us to use the gifts at our disposal to come to our own conclusion! The argument outlined above simply opens the way for abuse and manipulation by those who appoint themselves the interpreters of Gods word - especially the fundamentalists!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

it is just a big book with tons of old stories from before AD!.
