A fire plug is called that because the original water mains were hollowed-out logs!. When a fire engine came to a fire, they would use an augur to drill a hole!. When the fire was out, they would put a wooden plug in it, consequently we have hydrants that are called fire plugs!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
Probably for the same reason that a garden hose doesn't spray gardens "per se" - which is exactly the same as a fire hose!. It's what they're USED FOR as opposed to what they ARE!.
