Do both, mixing things up as needed!. Sometimes it's easier to get stuff *done* and to get people to understand *you* when you "become a character"!. Some folks just don't want to think hard enough to understand people as individuals, so they relate to specific "types" or characters instead!.
But that doesn't mean you give up your sense of character that you *have* entirely!. It only seems a contradiction when you apply that question *only* to yourself!.
Everyone *has* character of some sort!. Everyone!. People *become* a character for the sake of others!.!.!.this usually doesn't have a lot to do with the character a person *has* deep down, unfortunately!.
That disconnect does get folks in trouble, I do admit!. ^_^
