I know 2 people who used dating websites and have married the person they met!.!. but I know 30 more people that have said the sites were a waste of time!.
I have friends who have chatted online and got to know someone that way and dated people long distance!.!.!. Those usually are great at the beginning, but fizzle in a year or two if either party decides they want to stay living where they are or the move to be closer to the other person isn't soon enough!.!.!.
When I was 17, I met someone chatting on AOL and they lived 1000 miles away!. It lasted a year and a half!.!.!. then college happened and no matter how much I loved him, I realized my life couldn't be on hold to see where this was going (b/c we were kids in college and we'd get to see each other once or twice a year)!.!. A year later I was chatting on IRC, and met someone who lived 50 miles away!. Still a far distance, but manageable!. We're getting married soon!.!.!. so I think online dating works!.!.!. it's all in the level of commitment!.
