Yeppers!.!.!. scrap 1"x3" and panelling!. We had a fort in the side-yard, a bunker in the front-yard under the juniper bushes, and three tree houses in the orchard!. "Rifles" were often nothing more than scrap lengths of broomstick, or 1"x3" that we'd shape with a jig-saw when we were old enough to use it!. Bazooka's and mortars were tennis-ball cans taped together, and grenades were tennis-balls or water-balloons!.

As a side-note, there were NO fat or obese kids in our classes!.!.!. a kid MIGHT show up in first-grade rather chubby, but RECESS and PLAYING kept kids slim and healthy!.

In our teens, we moved our "fort" up into the California Coastal Range!.!.!. a 20 minute ride on our bikes and we had a SOLID clubhouse!. 4"x4" posts with 2x4's, plywood sheathing, and a tin roof!.

To this DAY, I've never owned a game-console, never enjoyed playing on one after the initial "wow-factor" of the first Atari console!. To my daughters' annoyance, I STILL won't buy one or permit one in my home!.

EDIT -- Use of the phrase "Back in the Day!.!." marks you as a YOUNGIN' of no more that 25 years old!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Forts were built only when it snowed!. Most of the fort building was done in the living room with the furniture and couch cushions!.
I agree with you, being outdoors was the best way to entertain ourselves back in the day!.
I think that it's funny that kids nowadays complain that their parents are on their backs all the time!. All they have to do is put down their electronic gadgetry and step out of the house!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Not in the backyard, but in my brother's room!.
