In cricket, when we have scored a century or are returning to the Pavilion after a particularly good day on the field & are cheered by everyone, we normally acknowledge, with the raise of our baton one hand & the caps of with the other !
In the National Cadet Corps, Air Force, Navy & Army, we take our caps/ hats off, the moment we enter buildings!. rooms etc!.
A police officer, on duty , normally takes off his hat when he is in the vicinity of a dead body or corpse!. As a mark of respect to the departed soul!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I've been taught that if you are a women there are no rules regarding the wearing of hats so long as they are in good taste!. For men I have been raised that the hat needs to be removed in a house of worship, during pray, during the pledge, during the national anthem, and during a flag being raised or lowered!Www@Enter-QA@Com
