*Completely Different*!?

--In-betweeners, or shape-shifters, would be odd but not unexpected (since some pollution out there can mess things up in terms of physical gender)!. Some fish already do this naturally: They are *hatched* male or female, but if the river's too crowded with their gender, they switch gears at puberty and jump the fence to the other side, so to speak, becoming the other one!. In this case you'd have males, females, and middlesex (those inbetweeners who can switch gears once in a while)!.

--also, I'd suspect on some distant worlds out there, some *alien people* likely have split some of the reproductive roles, for instance, so that *two genders breed* while a *third one* suffers the pregnancy and carries the young!. It isn't so far-fetched--some sea-horse species have the *males* carry the eggs in their mouths or throats until they hatch!. In this case it would be male, breeder (female alpha) and maiden (female beta--the one who gets pregnant)!.

Somewhat different!?

--Or things could just take a hint from primate psychology (if they haven't already, mind you), and offer up a *couple* of distinct versions of each gender, such as:

1) Full male--high hormones, strong, not very smart but good at being the Manly Man (tm)!.

2) Low-key male--lower hormones, smarter, not quite as Manly but possibly better at *raising young and being a father* after the kids are born!.

3) Low-key female--a low-hormone woman, again, more emphasis on social skills and intellect than on physical and reproductive attributes!. Your tomboys!.!.!.

4) Full Female--High hormone girly-girl who just wants to be a Mom, bake cookies and *snog* once in a while!. Not too bright but tends to be *unearthly pretty!.*

(and the catch!? while having kids would work out best if Fulls mated with Fulls and Low-keys with Low-keys, truth is (1) is most attracted to (3), while (2) and (4) get along best)

But yeah, it gets complicated, especially if you're talking about simple, asocial organisms like say, worms and such!.!.!.!.mainly because the more androgynous a simple species is, the more *violent they get* in mating (because everyone has a bit of *guy* in them--the testosterone making for more aggression across the board)!.

I hope this helps though!. ^_^Www@Enter-QA@Com
