Question: How were our second names 'decided'!?

The first was based on the Father's name!. Johnson, Davidson, Cobb was a form of Jacob!.
The second was people's trade!. Miller, Smith, Baker!. Then there are some jobs that have disappeared!. Fletcher (made arrows), Faulkner (handler of falcons)!.
The third is where someone lived!. Ford (lived by a river's crossing point!. French surname DuPont (lived near the bridge)
The final one is someones personal characteristics!.
Brown(the one with brown hair)!. Most descriptive surnames were complimentary!. Bright, Smart, Long!.
As for your surname, Pollard is an old word for a tree having it's top cut off!. So, it could be that your ancestors were tree surgeons!.

Your name was always there!.!.it just got carried throught the family!.Most of the time the men carries then name!.
So you probably got Pollard because your dad's last name is pollard,if your mom married your dad , then she probably goes by Mrs!.pollard!.She had a different name before too, which her dad (your granddad)carried!.!.!.but since she married your dad, it got changed after your dad!.
But all in all,it is just tradition!.Your last name was automatically going to be there!.most of the time, you get your dad's last name!.Simple!.

i have a vague memory from school!.!.!.!. years ago your surname came from your trade ie!. your surname would be smith if you were a blacksmith thats in england other names would come from other countries i know mine is originally dutch sorry for vague answer my memory is terrible!lol but at least that gives you an ideaWww@Enter-QA@Com
