Because it is polite!. For instance, if the person behind that closed door was a naked old woman getting dressed, someone knocking at her door to alert her of their presence would give her the time to call out, "Wait a minute! I'm just getting dressed!" If they just barged straight in (which is not the correct etiquette) they would see that old woman naked which wouldn't be too nice for that old woman!. It's a strange example, but I think that knocking on someones door before you enter their room just proves that you have the decency and manners to do so!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
Well, I would think out of respect!.!.but for me is more to protect my eyes from going blind!.
I used to work at a Children's Museum and the Executive director was in the ladies' lounge - with the door to the toilet stall open, and the stalls faced the lounge room before it!. And this Lady who was very, very obese was putting her undies back up but facing the toilet for some reason!. Maybe there was more room that way!. But as I came in I was EXPOSED to this tremendously Large Butt, and I could not see the rest of her torso because she was bending over!.!.!.and for a moment!.!.being that I am rather scattered brained I thought I had just seen a rather strange animal which had gotten in the bathroom somehow!.!.!.so I screamed and she screamed and it was very embarrassing to explain what the scream was all about!.
After that incident, I always made certain I knocked on ANY closed door before entering!.!.believe you me!Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think that's a very good question!. And the answer is that you really shouldn't have to!. Infact I'm not going to go knocking on anymore doors any longer!.And if anyone tells me to go outside and knock first, I think I'll go outside, knock the damn door down itself, and enter!.
