I've actually lived in a 100-year-old farmhouse!. No central heating, no running water, no insulation--it is NOT fun to chop wood, build a fire, and haul water from a spring!. In the winter, we considered the temperature inside the house "hot" when it was 57 degrees (and it dropped lower at night)!. As a kid, my parents forced me to work in the vegetable garden, helping with everything from planting to harvesting to canning, and I've seen hogs and chickens butchered!. And a rabbit!. No thank you!. I like not knowing where my food comes from and flipping a switch for heat!.
